There are no hotels or motels in Topanga Canyon. The former Topanga Ranch Motel on the Coast is closed.
Where We Are The Topanga Canyon Inn is tucked away in an idyllic California setting in the Santa Monica Mountains between Santa Monica and Malibu. The Inn is surrounded by thousands of acres of Topanga State Park wilderness which is further surrounded by thousands of square miles of Los Angeles. The Inn is set about a mile off busy Topanga Canyon Boulevard on a private street, so there is no road noise and no through traffic. The only sounds are the birds by day and the owls, crickets and occasional coyote at night. But one of the best features of the Inn is that it is only a fifteen minute drive both to the beaches of Malibu/Topanga/Santa Monica to the south or fabulous shopping in Woodland Hills and Calabasas to the north.
Your HostsYour hosts are Warren and Elena Roché. Warren is a retired studio musician who took up a second career as a builder. Elena is an artist with an international reputation for extraordinary floral watercolors. She works in all mediums and paints a wide variety of subjects. Her paintings, including many local plein air scenes in oil, grace the walls of the Inn and are available for purchase.
The Topanga Canyon Inn The Inn was designed and built in 1991 by your host, Warren Roché. The design and finish of the Inn was inspired by the great flourishing of vernacular architecture in Southern California from near the beginning of the twentieth century to the Great Depression. This particular style, the vernacular Mediterranean with Art Deco elements, can be seen in many older neighborhoods locally, most especially from the Hollywood Hills to San Marino. The style, with it's incorporation of sturdy materials such as floor and roof tile, plaster, stucco and wrought iron, works well with the climate and has an almost archetypical feeling of being correct, or at home, in its setting. Those familiar with Mediterranean Europe will easily recognize this style, where, for hundreds of years, while other building designs and materials have proven less resilient and have faded away, this kind of house has stood the test of time.
